Blast Costs 3 Law Enforcement Officers During Eviction Operation in the Verona Area
Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and at least 15 additional individuals sustained injuries in an apparently intentional detonation from gas at a farmhouse in Italy's north.
How It Happened
The detonation took place as officers and emergency crews approached the house in the vicinity of the city of Verona to enforce an eviction order for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.
All three officers killed belonged to the Carabinieri military police.
Arrests and Aftermath
One male and one female got detained at the location and a third person who ran away following the incident was found shortly later. All three have been admitted to medical facility.
The explosion could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and images from the location revealed the structure left as a mass of wreckage.
“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented the Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who mentioned that efforts had been made to evict the three siblings in the previous occasions.
Background and Motive
The president of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, said the residence was under an court order due to unpaid amounts accrued by the siblings.
Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to talk with the siblings who had locked themselves into the home. When the Carabinieri came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators think one of the residents set off the explosion.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief Commander Papagno informed news outlets.
“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the blast directly hit our personnel,” he said.
Petrol bombs were also discovered at the residence, the minister said.
Impact Assessment
The wounded by the blast comprised 11 other members of the military police as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a fire services member.
Based on information from the local prosecutor, the property was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.
The official thought the explosion had occurred on a story above the access point and told reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the explosion, he revealed members had “heard a whistle, presumably the gas cylinders being turned on”.
Community Reaction
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors told Italian media, mentioning that the family members had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than vacate the property.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
Minister of Defence the Defence Minister joined other government officials in paying tribute to the three officers who had lost their lives in the service of their country.
