‘Every minor detail – execute them’: The striker’s road from rehabilitation to goals with Athletic
The first time the Spanish forward competed in England, an teenage appearing for the reserve team against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at Adams Park in September 2015, he scored. The second time he played in British turf, against Sunderland weeks after, he scored. Another occasion, against Pep Guardiola’s team soon after, indeed, he scored again. Upon his comeback to the northwest to take on Manchester United at the sports complex in the 2017 season, he scored again. It was a superb volley, also. “Actually,” he says, “it ranks among my finest I’ve netted.” Thus the club did what was necessary: he was replaced.
“I got well angry,” the forward reveals, and then he starts laughing. “Probably there’s a recording. Our match against United and I performed well. I wasn’t allowed to feature the latter period: I was without a signed agreement, goals were flowing, speculation was rife, it’s typical. No confirmation on the Magpies’ pursuit, but I recall seeing about the Red Devils, the usual talk. I’m not certain if it was accurate, but had they contacted me, my desire was to remain at the club. It’s a privilege.”
Real Sociedad ease tension with bizarre win in unique Basque clash
At the facility, the city, the morning session is set to begin; post-session, the quick travel to Loiu and a further journey to the UK, now to take on the Magpies in the European elite competition on the upcoming match. Uttering the name lights him up. This is proving a tough year for Athletic, due in part to the pressures of being here. Defeated late on in the derby on Saturday, they have won only one of their past eight league games and been defeated by Arsenal and the German side in European competition. Yet, look at the overall situation, the major occasions he’s experienced and those that lie ahead, and a sense of thankful reflection within him.
In the three years since he had come back to Athletic, Gorka has been a final four contender in Europe, prevented from reaching the showpiece event by the English giants, and has ridden an historic vessel up the Nervión estuary surrounded by countless supporters after winning the Copa del Rey, the team’s initial silverware in a long wait. Now he is the top goal-getter in the European competition, where they are countercultural and making their first appearance in ten years. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he states.
Guruzeta thought it difficult enough just to break into the senior squad and his assessment was correct. The son of the ex-La Real star his father and a season ticket holder at the opposition side, Guruzeta is from the Antiguoko academy, the local academy that produced Mikel Arteta, the former star and the tactician. He signed for Athletic at seventeen but after his first-team bow in that summer, he suffered a torn cruciate, the cut, a demotion and a recall before he could earn his place, returning at 26 to enjoy the highlights of the club’s history.
“You go into the academy thinking you won’t reach the top level but with every stage you progress through you’re remaining and you can notice the proximity. You arrive and then … you’re sent away.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in a handful of matches between his bow and that period. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances there and my knee gave way.
“It was a huge blow but I reflect on it as a turning point because it made me change the perspective. Recovering from a long-term injury is challenging, but it aids growth. You adopt practices you didn’t have. It’s not about neglect, but I attended practice and then go home, as a youngster does. At Lezama, you have everything, so utilize it all. Work, precaution. Get in the gym. With hip imbalance, address that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, make it a 12 or a 14. Every small aspect: perform them.
“In the first team you’re going to face physical challenges who have crashed into players 200,000 times. Extremely powerful. Seeing previous pictures: I had slender legs. Thus incidents occur. Current photos and the change is dramatic. The setback taught me. Training finishes, but there’s more to do. Everyone else is ready, really ready; no exceptions.”
Game time is essential. He left in tears in that year, aged 23, joining the second tier. During his Sabadell spell in that season, he got three strikes in 40 games. At Amorebieta in the following period, the scoring picked up. “Many experience this: temporary moves, ended deals. Should you reverse it, dedication, confidence, and should the time come the requirement appears in your position, a return could happen. You have to be ready. Upon the recall, it was a dream come true. To then win the Copa del Rey, European football, and make the UCL … pfff.”
No wonder he says appreciate the experience. Especially after the prior campaign which, on occasions, was focused on persistence. From top scorer with sixteen goals, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
