Pacific Bluefin Tuna Fetches Record Bid of $3.2m at Japanese Capital New Year Sale
A massive Pacific bluefin tuna created waves at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; ÂŁ2.4m) during the market's inaugural auction of the new year.
The successful bid for the 535-pound fish came from the operator of a well-known sushi chain, which runs restaurants domestically and overseas.
"The year's tuna brings a prosperous start," stated the company president, a familiar participant at the yearly first sale.
Known as the Tuna King, this industry figure is famous for placing substantial bids for premium bluefin tuna at these auspicious new year auctions.
Auction Surprise and Record-Setting Precedent
After the auction, the successful bidder informed the press that he was "astonished at the amount," noting, "I believed we would be able to purchase it a little for less, but the price skyrocketed rapidly."
This new acquisition surpasses his own record purchases:
- He paid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
- He spent 155 million yen a year later.
- In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).
Even after previously commenting that he thought he "did too much," he has now managed to surpass his personal record once again.
An Annual Spectacle of High Prices
The first auction at the Toyosu fish market is notoriously characterized by exceptionally high prices. The previous year, the first tuna was bought for 207 million yen by another food company, which announced the fish would be available at its restaurants nationwide.
The frenetic energy at the fish market during these early morning auctions has become a must-see spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.
Immediate Consumption
The extremely valuable tuna was shortly thereafter processed for diners at the entrepreneur's sushi establishments immediately after the auction ended.
"I sense like I've begun the year in a auspicious way after eating something so auspicious as the year begins," remarked one happy patron.
